Resplendent

The 'Adopt an Artwork' program at NERAM is an ongoing and long term strategy to ensure the continued health and accessibility of our collections. During any exhibition that includes works from a NERAM collection you may see 'adoption' tags that highlight specific works that require adoption for the purpose of receiving conservation treatments.

In our current exhibition Resplendent, there are several works by women artists that are available for adoption including Thea Prcotor's 'The Terrace'. Thea Proctor was born and grew up in Armidale and became one of the leading artists in Australia’s modernist art movement. Proctor was inspired by French 18th-century fan designs, Japanese and Chinese art where the fan shape was common and fellow Australian artist John Condor who also painted fanciful scenes on silk in a fan shape. In 'The Terrace' we can see Proctor’s interest in the d

ecorative arts and fashion by her detailed and elaborate images of elegantly dressed women in picturesque landscapes holding fans of their own as well as lace parasols. On seeing the beautiful costumes at the Ballet Russe in 1911 she exclaimed: 'it would be difficult to imagine anything more beautiful and inspiring'.
