Treatment of 'The Willow' by Hans Heysen

This beautiful landscape painting by German born Australian artist Hans Heyson was examined and conserved by ICS Paintings Conservator Claire Heasman.

During the examination, Claire discovered a number of cracks in the painted media and several corresponding paint losses. To address these issues, the painting was first unframed so the surface could be properly cleaned. The cracks and losses were then consolidated, filled, and retouched where necessary to make them less visible. To complete the treatment, a surface coating was applied to prevent further paint loss.

The decorative frame had losses in its composition moulding. It was carefully cleaned, then the moulding was recreated at the sites of loss and retouched to match the existing gilt finish.

Finally, the painting was reframed with a corflute backing board to prevent dust build up at the back.

To get a sense of the full treatment process from start to finish, check out this short video, which shows Claire working on the piece.

Adopted by Jeremy Smith in 2015.
